چکیده

We consider the possibility of creating an adiabatic transition through a narrow neck, or point contact, between two different quantized Hall states that have the same number of edge modes, such as n51 and n 5 1 3. We apply both the composite-fermion and Luttinger-liquid formalism to analyze the transition. We suggest that using such adiabatic junctions one could build a dc step-up transformer, where the output voltage is higher than the input. Difficulties standing in the way of an experimental implementation of the adiabatic junction are addressed. @S0163-1829~98!02104-3#

Line junctions in the quantum Hall effect

A long narrow gate across a fractional quantum Hall fluid at filling n51/m with odd integer m , creates a one-dimensional ~1D! system that is isomorphic to a disordered 1D electron gas with attractive interactions. By varying the gate potential along such a line junction, it should be possible to tune through the 1D localization transition, predicted for an attractively interacting electron gas...

Reflection symmetry and quantized Hall resistivity near the quantum Hall transition

We present direct numerical evidence for reflection symmetry of longitudinal resistivity rxx and quantized Hall resistivity rxy near the transition between the n51 quantum Hall state and insulator, in accord with recent experiments. Our results show that a universal scaling behavior of conductances, sxx and sxy , in the transition regime decide the reflection symmetry of rxx and quantization of...

Variational Monte Carlo calculation of the spin gap in the n51 quantum Hall liquid

A variational method of calculating the spin 1 excitation energies of the n51 quantum Hall liquid is presented in detail. We are able to include Landau-level mixing and finite-thickness effects. The many-body wave functions of the states near n51 filling are taken to be a product of a lowest-Landau-level Laughlin-type wave function and a Jastrow factor. A significant reduction in the calculated...

Neutrophil infiltration, glial reaction, and neurological disease in transgenic mice expressing the chemokine N51/KC in oligodendrocytes.

Chemokines (pro-inflammatory chemoattractant cytokines) are expressed in pathological conditions of the central nervous system (CNS). Previous studies suggested that the CNS is relatively resistant to leukocyte diapedesis after chemokine injection, leaving their functional role unresolved. The CNS function of N51/KC, a neutrophil-selective chemokine, was addressed by expressing N51/KC under con...

Structures for interacting composite fermions: Stripes, bubbles, and fractional quantum Hall effect

Much of the present day qualitative phenomenology of the fractional quantum Hall effect can be understood by neglecting the interactions between composite fermions altogether. For example, the fractional quantum Hall effect at n5n/(2pn61) corresponds to filled composite-fermion Landau levels, and the compressible state at n51/2p to the Fermi sea of composite fermions. Away from these filling fa...
